Offenhauser 4059 is a set of finned aluminum valve covers designed specifically for the Oldsmobile 394 V8 engine. These covers are known as “five-hole” or “five-bolt” valve covers, meaning they are fastened with five bolts around the edge. The fitment for these valve covers is for Oldsmobile 394 engines from the years 1959 to 1964. These engines were commonly found in various Oldsmobile cars from that era, such as the Oldsmobile 88, 98, and Dynamic 88 models.

These covers do not have provisions for oil breathers, so for crankcase ventilation you may need to:

• Drill and Install a Side-Mount Breather:

Drill appropriately sized holes (using templates or instructions—usually a pattern of quarter-inch holes for baffling) into the side or top of the valve cover. Then, use a bolt-on or side-mount breather (such as Offenhauser’s aluminum side-mount) that can act as a crankcase vent, providing additional airflow.

• Add a PCV Valve:

Drill and tap the cover (preferably in a thicker part of the casting) to install a bung or grommet for a PCV valve. Connect the valve via hose to engine vacuum (typically at the carburetor base or intake manifold). It’s crucial to NOT place this hole directly above a rocker to avoid oil splash issues. You may want to tack-weld or press-fit the bung from the inside for a seamless look. Some owners opt for a catch can if they want to keep oil mist out of the intake.
